Family worship doesn’t have to mean recreating a Sunday morning service in the living room. It can be simple. Maybe it happens around the dinner table, in the car, before bed, or while everyone is still in pajamas. The goal is to help families make worship a normal part of everyday life.
Here are 14 simple ideas church leaders can encourage families to try.
1. Sing a Worship Song Together
Pick a familiar worship song and sing it together. It doesn’t have to sound good. The point isn’t a family concert. It’s worship.
2. Read a Psalm
Choose a Psalm and read it aloud together. Let the words of Scripture give your family something to think about and talk about.
3. Pray Around the Table
Instead of having the same person pray every time, let everyone take a turn. Even young children can offer a simple prayer of thanks.
4. Have a Family Devotional
Read a short passage of Scripture and talk about it together. Ask simple questions like, “What does this tell us about God?” or “How can we live this out?”
5. Share What You’re Thankful For
Go around the room and have everyone name something they’re thankful for. It’s a simple way to turn everyone’s attention toward God’s goodness.
6. Listen to Worship Music
Put on worship music during breakfast, a road trip, or while you’re working around the house. Worship doesn’t have to happen only when everyone is sitting quietly.
7. Memorize Scripture Together
Choose a short verse and work on memorizing it as a family. Repeat it in the car, around the dinner table, or before bed.
8. Pray for Someone Who Needs It
Think of a friend, family member, neighbor, missionary, or coworker who needs prayer. Then pray for that person together.
9. Take a Family Prayer Walk
Walk through your neighborhood and pray for the people who live around you. Pray for families, schools, churches, businesses, and your community.
10. Tell Stories of God’s Faithfulness
Share stories about times God answered prayer, provided for your family, or helped you through a difficult season. Kids especially benefit from hearing how God has worked in the lives of their parents and grandparents.
11. Let the Kids Lead
Let children choose a song, read Scripture, or lead the family in prayer. Family worship shouldn’t always be something parents do while everyone else watches.
12. Use Mealtime as Worship Time
Keep a Bible nearby and occasionally use dinner as an opportunity to read Scripture, ask a question, or talk about faith.
13. Pray Before a Big Decision
When your family faces an important decision, stop and pray about it together. Let your children see that prayer isn’t just something reserved for emergencies or bedtime.
14. Serve Someone Together
Prepare a meal for someone, help a neighbor, visit someone who is lonely, or find another practical way to serve. Worship isn’t limited to singing and praying. Families can worship God by serving others.
Keep It Simple
Family worship doesn’t need elaborate plans, expensive resources, or a perfectly quiet house. A scripture reading, a song, and a few minutes of prayer can be enough. The goal is to help your family see that worship belongs in everyday life.
And if the toddler interrupts the prayer, the dog starts barking, and somebody spills their cereal? That’s okay. It’s still family worship.
